SILJA SERENADE
The unexpected listing of the 'Silja Serenade' caused a seemingly dangerous situation near the Åland Islands on Aug 19 at about 12:50 a.m. enroute from from Stockholm to Helsinki. According to Tallink Silja's Communications Director Marika Nöjd, the tilting did not cause a dangerous situation. If someone had been caught under a pile of plates, that would have been unfortunate, but those restaurants were already closed by this point when the plates and a refrigerator had fallen over. Dozens of drinks were spilled on the floor. If that tilt had happened when the deck kiosk was open, the staff could have been seriously injured. The space is small, and there would not have been time to react. A second roll tilted the ship so much that passengers had trouble getting from the cabin to the corridor. Shampoo and makeup flew off shelves in the bathroom. There were a lot of people at the reception asking about what had happened. The employees were walking around quickly and talking on their walkie-talkies. There was no public announcement because most of the passengers were already asleep. The ship listed by about six degrees at most. According to a Tallink Silja employee, the ship's captain told the workers that a navigation error forced them to make a sharp turn, which led to the tilt. An internal company investigation has been launched. The weather did not affect the tilting. The sea conditions were excellent at the time of the incident. SUN PRINCESS
A crew member of the 'Sun Princess' was missing after going overboard on Aug 20, 2025, while the ship was sailing toward Istanbul and transiting through the Dardanelles Strait after a port call in Chania. The crew member’s fall was verified after a review of the ship’s CCTV footage. The ship’s crew immediately initiated emergency procedures and began a coordinated search with multiple maritime SAR authorities. After several hours of searching, the crew member has not yet been located. The cruise line’s assistance team was working to support the crew member’s family. The incident marked the first time a person has gone overboard from the vessel. As a result of the ongoing search and coordination with local authorities, the 'Sun Princess' was directed to a position off Tekirdağ, resulting in a change to its itinerary. The scheduled visit to Mykonos, Greece, has been canceled, and the ship’s arrival in Istanbul was delayed. The ship was due to arrive in Istanbul on Aug 22 at 2:00 p.m. Passengers should be back on board by 11:30 p.m.. The ship’s arrival in Athens on Aug 23 was currently scheduled to remain unchanged. Princess Cruises automatically refunded all pre-booked shore excursions for Mykonos to guests’ shipboard accounts. Guests who had booked half-day tours for the canceled port of call were informed that updated meeting times for those tours would be sent to their staterooms. The ship’s Tour Office and Shore Excursions Desk would have limited hours. The cruise line also provided support for passengers affected by the event. The letter offers access to “specially trained counselors” and provides a phone number for guests who wish to speak with one. The news of the incident has been widely shared on social media, with many users expressing their condolences and support for the missing crew member and their family. The letter from Captain Street concluded with a message of reassurance to passengers, stating that the “safety and well-being of our guests and crew members remains our highest priority.” The crew asked for passengers’ “support and patience” during this challenging time. KRYSTALSEA
An integrated tug and barge (ITB), operating in the Prince William Sound, suffered a complete connection failure on Jan 11, 2025, at 2.50 a.m. LT, when all four push lines of the 'Krystal Sea' parted during routine transit conditions, leading to a constructive total loss of the barge 'Cordova Provider', valued at $2.9 million, according to a National Transportation Safety Board investigation. After the four lines connecting the tug to the barge suddenly parted, the barge uncoupled anddrifted for approximately four hours before grounding on the coast of Axel Lind Island, Alaska at about 06.35 a,m, The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the probable cause of the grounding of the 'Cordova Provider' was due to shock loading that led to the parting of the push lines connecting the barge to the tug The connection system utilized three wedges fitting into recesses within the notch, along with four push lines, two each on port and starboard sides, that were tensioned by winches to secure the vessels together. At the time of the incident, the ITB was operating in seas of 4-6 feet with approximately 35-knot winds on the vessel’s port quarter—conditions that investigators noted were routinely encountered on the vessel’s normal transit route between Whittier, Cordova, and Valdez. The investigation revealed that five days before the casualty, the captain had visually inspected the four push lines and documented no deficiencies. A post-casualty inspection by a technician from a local industrial and maritime supply company determined that the lines were in fair condition with no visible defects, concluding that the lines and soft shackle parted due to exceeding their breaking strength. The investigators believed that after the first push line parted due to shock loading, the remaining three lines experienced a cascading failure as they took up additional strain. However, the NTSB noted it was “undetermined how the first push line that parted was shock loaded”, given that the ITB was operating in familiar conditions with properly rigged lines.
CARNIVAL PANORAMA
The Carnival Panorama' tilted heavily after hitting a major thunderstorm off the coast of Mazatlán, which swept through the Gulf of California on Aug 20, 2025 at 8.15 p.m. PDT, on the third night of its 7-day Mexican Riviera itinerary. In the dining area, broken plates was scattered across the floor. water was dripping from ceilings and elevators, in which some people were stuck. Water entered the main lobby and some elevator banks, rendering some elevators inoperable. It was reaching several inches above balcony sliding doors and shattered glass at an outside bar. The 'Carnival Panorama' was located between Mazatlan and La Paz. She had departed Los Angeles on Aug 16t with a stop in Mazatlan on Aug 20. The tilting of the ship occurred as the ship was sailing towards its next scheduled port of call, La Paz. The ship stabilized, as the captain maneuvered it to calmer seas, the crew quickly turned their attention to assisting guests, and things were cleaned up quickly. CARNIVAL SUNSHINE
On Aug 18 at 2 a.m. a massive fight broke out on board the 'Canivial Suinshine' allegedly over chicken tenders on the final day of the cruise en route from the Bahamas to Miami. A viral video showed a large group of passengers exchanging blows, with some people falling to the floor while others were caught in headlocks. Punches were thrown as shoes and phones went flying across the floor. Security guards rushed in to break up the chaos but struggled to control the brawl. At one point, a guard ran out of the fight to call for backup on his radio. There were no reports of any serious injuries in the violence. There were also no reports of any police action in connection with the matter. The brawl came just weeks after Carnival introduced stricter policies aimed at curbing disruptive behavior, including a curfew for guests under 17, requiring them to be accompanied by an adult after 1 a.m. The Carnival Cruise line has also faced previous controversies involving similar incidents, including fights that led to lifetime bans for some passengers. RIVER DRONE 4
On the evening of Aug 20, 2025, the 'River Drone 4', en route from Antwerp to Limburg, suffered damage while passing through the lock of the Albert Canal in Olen. A hole with a diamtre of approximately 15 centimeters was torn into the hull near a fuel tank, causing approximately 10 tons of gas oil to leak into the canal near the lock complex. A large spill spread over several kilometers, was floating on the water, spanning the entire width mainly on the west bank of the canal. The fire department arrived immediately and brought the situation so far under control, but the oil had already spread over several kilometers. There was a film of oil on the water from the Olen lock to the Olen-Hoogbuul bridge on a length of two to three kilometers, The Brabo company was called in. Around midnight, it started to contain and extract the oil slick, thus averting the risk of the oil flowing into the port of Antwerp.T here were five zones where the oil has been contained, and Brabo was vacuuming the sludge. The lock was also cleaned during the night. Shipping on the Albert Canal between Olen and nearby Ham was at a complete standstill. The 'River Drone 8' (MMSI: 205568290),was moored alongside in pos. 51° 09' N 004° 53' E to pump out the remaining oil. Odor nuisance has been reported in surrounding municipalities. The Antwerp drinking water company Waterlink draws its drinking water from the Albert Canal, so everything had to be done to prevent the oil from reaching Antwerp. As the oil was floating and being held back by the Olen lock, that problem was resolved for the time being. The cleaning work was expected to be continued until the evening of Aug 21. With small boats and floating oil booms, the majority of the oil was removed upstream. The area around the vessel, where the thickest layer was, has been almost completely cleaned up. Next the remaining oil was transported to the lock complex because that's where was easiest to suck it up. One of the three locks, the push barge lock, was already cleaned overnight The northern and central locks still need edto be done. A small amount of oil was still present along the river bank. Regarding the cause of the accident, the maritime police have launched an investigation and have questioned the master. SCH 2640
In the Peute Port in Hamburg-Veddel, there was a diesel spill, after the 'SCH 2624' suffered a leak from two tanks on the morning of Aug 21, 2025. When the first responders of the Hamburg Fire Department arrived at the site, an area of approximately 2000 m² was already contaminated by the leaked fuel. The emergency responders initially prepared to contain the water pollution and simultaneously began pumping approximately two tons remaining fuel into the intact second tank. This prevented further leakage of operating fluids. To protect the surrounding waters from further spread, several small boats from the fire department, the fireboat 'Prag', and a small boat from the water police deployed approximately 400 meters of oil booms and more than 175 meters of oil absorption tubes. This prevented the fuel from spreading further into the Northern Elbe and limited the contamination to the Peute Port. While the oil booms were still being deployed, divers from the Hamburg Fire Department temporarily sealed the approximately 10x1 cm leak below the water surface with special bandages and wedges. A permanent repair was then to be carried out by a specialist company in coordination with the Federal Agency for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA). The Hamburg Fire Department, with approximately 60 emergency personnel – including several specialist personnel from the Technical and Environmental Protection Station – was deployed for approximately five hours.
