HANSEATIC SPIRIT
The 'Hanseatic Spirit' with approximately 200 passengers aboard got stuck in the ice on March 30, 2025, after leaving the port of Kemi afterup to 70 centimetres of ice accumulated in the Bothnian Bay. Seven icebreakers are currently in operation to support the merchant ships on their journeys to the Finnish and Swedish ports. After a transit of about 200 miles, the ice-free part of the Baltic Sea was reached near the port of Lulea. The ship is now on its way back to Hamburg. It is scheduled to pass through the Kiel Canal on April 4, which will also mark the end of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' last winter cruise of the 2024/2025 season. GRANDE COSTA DAVORI
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will convene a public board meeting on April 15, 2025, to determine what caused the fire aboard the 'Grande Costa D’Avorio', that claimed the lives of two firefighters in Newark, New Jersey on July 5, 2023. It had started when a pusher vehicle, which was operated by shoreside workers, caught fire while loading cars on an interior garage deck. At the time of the incident, the vessel, operated by Grimaldi Group, was carrying approximately 1,200 vehicles and 157 containers. The operator confirmed there were no electric vehicles or hazardous cargo aboard. Two firefighters became disoriented in the smoke-filled decks and died. Six additional emergency responders sustained injuries during the response operations. “The local fire department responding to the incident had little to no maritime firefighting training, experience, or familiarization with cargo ships of any type,” according to preliminary findings from the ongoing Coast Guard investigation. The U.S. Coast Guard, conducting a parallel investigation, has already held public hearings examining the vessel’s condition, cargo loading procedures, and the initial response by both ship’s crew and local firefighters. In response to the incident, the Coast Guard issued Marine Safety Alert 09-23 in Nov 2023, calling for improved coordination of marine firefighting preparation efforts nationwide:. “Vessel fires require more firefighting resources and different technical skills than many land-based firefighting agencies traditionally possess,” the Coast Guard investigators noted. The situation is further complicated by language barriers between international crews and local first responders, particularly during high-stress emergencies. During the upcoming meeting, the NTSB board will vote on findings, probable cause, and safety recommendations, potentially leading to changes in the draft final report. Both the Coast Guard and NTSB will issue separate investigation reports aimed at enhancing maritime and first-responder safety to prevent similar incidents.

STENA IMMACULATE
Claims for compensation are being made against the owner of the 'Solong', which was towed to Aberdeen, where it is expected to be declared a total loss. The battle for the large amounts of compensation has already begun in the British courts, where the legal aftermath will take place, as the alision occurred in British waters. The owner, the German shipping company Ernst Russ, has set up a so-called “limitation fund” at the Admiralty Court in London, a legal maneuver that will place a financial limit on how much compensation can be paid. All containers on board the vessel, which sailed for the Icelandic shipping company Samskip, have been destroyed in the fire. The expected constructive total loss of the ship is triggering the full amount of compensation. In addition, en there is the damage on board the 'Stena Immaculate', to which is added the value of the aviation fuel that was in the damaged tank. The tanker is still at anchor in pos. 53° 44' N 000° 24' E, waiting for the aviation fuel in the ship's intact tanks to be transferred to the tanker 'Fure Vyl'. After the STS, the plan is to tow the 'Stena Immaculate' to Newcastle upon Tyne, where the damage will be assessed.

GOLDEN CARRIER
The deal between Unity Line and A-Ships is at risk of falling apart. During the voyage to Perama, the 'Golden Carrier' suffered some mechanical problems, which made both the crew and the shipping company doubt the condition of the ship and whether it is profitable to repair and renovate her at all. The ferry has arrived in Perama on April 1, and rumors wsre starting to spread that either Unity Line will take her back to the Baltic Sea and return the money to the Greeks, or the ship will be sold for scrapping if the damage proves to be too serious for the Polish shipping company.
