On Nov 27, 2024, at 12.56 p.m. the H.M. Coastguard requested the launch of th All Weather lifeboat, '13-32 Ruth & David Arthur' in Exmouth to multiple reports of a vessel on fire on the River Exe, opposite the Starcross railway station. The boat with six volunteer crew onboard, launched shortly after and headed to the Exmouth Marina to pick up members of the Exmouth Fire service and their equipment, supported by the Exmouth Coastguard Rescue team. Having on board the firefighters, the volunteer crew quickly arrived on scene with the historic Starcross to Exmouth ferry 'Princess Marina', which was already well ablaze, and the fire crew proceeded to control the remaining elements of the fire. There were no persons onboard at the time of the incident. Other vessels, including the 'Simon Turl Moorings', were also providing assistance and attempted to control the fire, but the vessel was already too ablaze to prevent its destruction. The Newton Abbot’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) deployed booms around the vessel to contain potential environmental damage, while Urban Search and Rescue teams used drones to survey the area and observe for potential spills. When the fire had been put out, the Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew assisted with placing members of the fire service onto the Exmouth Harbour Masters vessel to secure it under tow and move it to a safe mooring location on the river. The incident was safely concluded at 4.10 p.m., and the RNLI crew then returned the fire crew to the Exmouth Marina before they stood down. The ferry service is operated by the Rackley family, transporting passengers across the Exe Estuary between Starcross and Exmouth. The ferry had come to the end of its operating season, which is typically from April to October, less than a month ago. Cochin
The Cochin Port Trust handled a record 3.20 million tonnes of cargo in December 2020, a monthly record volume for it. The volume is a 10.55 per cent growth over December 2019, said Cochin Port Trust chairperson M. Beena, in a message to the employees and officials of the port trust. Container movement too touched a consistent 60,000 TEUs consecutively in the four months leading to December. The surge in the movement of cargo is being looked upon as new shoots in the port business after the plans of 2020 were washed away in the COVID-19 pandemic. The growth in cargo movement is “charting a new growth trajectory. However, we need to find new vistas for revenue generation by optimum utilisation of resources available to us,” the chairperson told the port community. The port has been recovering from the losses, which had affected it for the past decade. But the pandemic and resultant loss in business had pushed the port into the red. But the port was expected to make a recovery by the end of 2021, the chairperson said. There was optimism stemming from the fact that though there was a substantial fall in cargo movement in the first half of the current financial year, there was some recovery in the second half. The port trust was also optimistic that the inauguration of the Kochi-Mangaluru LNG pipeline earlier this month would pave the way for more gas volumes and revenue for the port. Meanwhile, figures from the Indian Ports Association showed that ports across the country suffered owing to the pandemic and its impact on the global economy. The average fall across the major ports in the country is nearly nine per cent for the period. Mumbai suffered a fall of more than 17 per cent and the Momugao traffic fell more than 23 per cent and JNPT traffic was down by over 12 per cent. Haldia Dock Complex, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, and New Mangaluru suffered lesser falls in business.
Kiel
The inauguration of the new shore power facility in Kiel on Dec 9, 2020, meant that Stena Line now have the possibility to connect 14 vessels at seven terminals with on-shore electricity during port stay. The new connection in Kiel will reduce the CO2 emissions from the two vessels Stena Scandinavica and Stena Germanica with 2,700 tonnes per year. In total Stena Line reduce its CO2 emissions with shore power with 13,000 tonnes per year. The new shore power facility in Kiel provides 100% green electricity, thus also avoiding NOX-, SOX- and particle emissions during the port stay of the 'Stena Germanica' and 'Stena Scandinavica'. Aside from Kiel, Stena Line have the possibility to connect to shore power supply at its two terminals in Göteborg, as well as in Karlskrona, Norvik, Trelleborg and Hoek van Holland, thus saving 13,000 t of CO2 per year in its network. Of the 36 vessels in the Stena Line fleet, 14 are now equipped with High Voltage Shore Connection systems (HVSC). “Shore power supply is important for us for two reasons: First, we want to have an immediate positive impact on the air quality in the ports we use. Secondly, we expect an even higher share of electrification in ports in the future – at cars, trucks, port vehicles and not the least at ships. With our battery and power bank projects, we develop our ferry services further in that direction constantly and we learn something new each day. In 2030 we expect to launch a 100 % battery powered and fossil free vessel”, say Niclas Mårtensson, CEO Stena Line and member of the Swedish Government Elelctrification Commission. Kiels mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer inaugurated the new façade of the shore power facility, which has been specially designed and illuminated. The inauguration marks the offizial start of the on-shore power supply for Stena Line in Kiel. The facility was co-funded by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein (8,9 m Euro) and the EU (1,26 m Euro). In addition, Germany´s federal government recently agreed on a political package to decrease the user prices for on-shore electricity significantly. “We are very grateful for the political support on various levels. The planned decrease of user prices for shore side electricity is an important step for the competitiveness of environmentally- and climate-friendly technologies in Northern Europe. At the same time, we are very happy about the continuous positive dialogue with our partners at Port of Kiel and the city of Kiel”, says Ron Gerlach, Managing Director, Stena Line Germany.
GEO BARENTS
On Nov 28, the 'Geo Barents' rescued some 70 migrants who had fallen from their boat into the water in the central Mediterranean after being intercepted by a boat with armed Libyan coastguards, which took 29 women and children under threat of gunfire. The gunmen threatened the people on the boat, fired into the air and into the water, forcing 70 people to jump into the sea. They confiscated all cell phones and money they found. The gunmen attacked the people with the butts of their rifles to silence them. Then, threatening them with their weapons, they took the women and children. The 'Geo Barents' managed to save all people from the water, but the patrol boat left with the women and children in the direction of Libya. "This aggressive and irresponsible behaviour by a boat with armed men on board is unacceptable and endangers the lives of many people and separates entire family groups," the humanitarian organization Médicos Sin Fronteras (MSF) stated.
HMNZS MANAWANUI
Military investigators of the the New Zealand Navy have submitted an investigation report into the grounding of the "Manawanui", which found a chain of errors was to blame for the sinking of the research vessel. The investigative court explained in their preliminary report, the officers on the bridge were apparently subject to a serious error. As the "Manawanui" approached the reef off the island of Upulo, the crew operated under the assumption that their ship could no longer be steered becazse there was possibly a technical problem with the bow thruster. Given the rapidly approaching coast, the crew on the bridge apparently neglected to check, whether the "Manawanui" could be steered under manual control. Because there was apparently no technical problem. The autopilot steered the ship, and it only lets go of the rudder when it is switched off or on standby. As a result, the "Manawanui" headed for the reef, which was set on the autopilot. Because human error was identified as the cause, a separate disciplinary process would need to begin once the Court of Inquiry had concluded. The process would look at the officer in control of the ship, the supervising officer on the bridge, and the commanding officer of the 'Manawanui'. There were a number of other contributing factors leading to the grounding, which would be considered in more detail during phase two of the inquiry. These include training, planning, supervision, readiness, and risk assessment.
Puerto Brisa
VETLEFJORD
On Nov 28, 2024,, the "Vetlefjord" got its propulsion fouled by a rope in the propeller and had to cancel the sailings between Dyrøy and Øyrekken. After the obstruction was removed, the ferry was set to depart again at 7:30 p.m. from Sula. A normal departure was expected at 8 p.m. from Dyrøy.
TIM S DOOL
The 'Tim S. Dool' remained stuck in the mud on the Crysler Island Shoal in pos. 44° 55' N 075° 06' W as of Nov 27. The Algoma Central-owned freighter is fully loaded with a grain shipment. There were no injuries, and the ship was not taking on water. There also have been no leaks or pollution in the waterway. No explanation has been given thus far for why the ship struck the shoal. Water levels on Lake St. Lawrence have decreased in the run up to the end of the 2024 shipping season. However, there are no warnings in place for this section of the river of possible high spots or areas of caution along the river bottom. Early efforts to free her by raising the water level in the area by two feet were unsuccessful. Possible solutions included lightering some of her grain cargo so tugs can pull her free.
