GRANDE NIGERIA
A container with 500 kilos of cocaine was seized in the port of Antwerp, which had been scanned in the port of Montevideo. However, the 'Grande Nigeria', that transported it and stayed in port from Feb 16-19, 2025, had called at several other ports before arriving at Antwerp, where the drug was finally found. According to the Attorney General's Office the container could have been filled with the drugs in other ports, since it was proven that the seals were violated. The scanned images at the port of Montevideo confirmed that the illicit substance was not in the container at the time of its departure. In addition, the seal with which it left Montevideo was not the same one with which it arrived in Anwerp, although it did remain intact when passing through Zárate, according to Argentine Customs. Three other seals were found inside the container in a plastic bag, one of which had been reported missing by the MSC shipping company in 2023. The ship already had a history of being used to transport illicit substances, so it was not ruled out that the crew was involved.
STENA NORDICA
After the body of Mary Cash, 39, was found inside the bathroom of the 'Stena Nordica' as it approached Rosslare Port in Wexford, a row broke out between a group of people on Feb 25, which forced the ship's captain to alert authorities at the port. But a post mortem investigation has found her death was a suspected suicide. She and members of her family had been travelling to a funeral in Kildare before her death. Mary Cash was on the ship with her husband Ned, who was escorting the body of his father Martin Cash in a hearse back to his homeland to be buried. The body was in a hearse on the ferry. They left Fishguard in West Wales on the afternoon of Feb 25, a day after the family held a service at St. Anthony of the Padua Roman Catholic Church in Edgware, North London. The funeral of Martin Cash was delayed a day after the tragic discovery. There are plans for Mary's funeral but they had to wait for the results of her post-mortem to be carried out. The Gardai have yet to establish a sequence of events that led up to the discovery of her body and row on the ferry. The post mortem examination on the deceased woman has been completed, the results of which were not being released for operational reasons. The male arrested in connection with the investigation has been released from detention without charge. A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) continued to engage with and support the family of the deceased. A Garda Senior Investigating Officer was supervising the completion of an investigation for the purpose of a file to assist a Coroner's Inquest. SPIRIT OF TASMANIA 4
The Scottish Government is in advanced negotiations to lease the 'Spirit of Tasmania IV' to house Ukrainian refugees. The ship, which arrived at the port of Leith in late 2024, would replace the 'Victoria I' that previously accommodated displaced Ukrainians. The Tasmanian Government and the state-owned ferry operator TT-Line are currently in lease negotiations, with an official announcement expected on Feb 28, 2025. The Scottish Government had relied on the 'Victoria I' since late 2022 to house Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian war. The ship provided accommodation for 1,319 displaced Ukrainians during its approximately one-year deployment. The operation cost approximately $45.2 million each month. While the potential cost to lease the 'Spirit of Tasmania IV' remains undisclosed, the vessel offers significantly less capacity with 301 cabins compared to the 'Victoria I's 739.
