Ferry suffered engine issues

Wed Apr 09 15:35:01 CEST 2025 Timsen

The 'Stena Nordica', serving on the route from Fishguard to Rosslare, suffered an engine problem on April 5, 2025, and was unable to depart Fishguard, when the 2:00 p.m. sailing had to be cancelled. As a result, the evening return trip from Rosslare was also scrapped. Stena Line advised affected passengers that they could rebook or divert to the Holyhead to Dublin route. Some opted to remain on board the 'Stena Nordica' in the hope that the vessel would sail at 1:30 a.m. on April 6) but that service was also cancelled. Also the afternoon sailing on the St. George's Channel route was 'in doubt. The ferry operator subsequently announced that this had been cancelled, together with the return service from Rosslare Europort on the evening of April 7. The next scheduled service for the 'Stena Nordica' was on April 8 at 01.30 a.m. from Fishguard and Rosslare, which has a scheduled sailing time of four hours. The ship finally left Fishguard on April 9 at 2 p.m.

Death of woman was suspected suicide

Fri Feb 28 11:23:42 CET 2025 Timsen

After the body of Mary Cash, 39, was found inside the bathroom of the 'Stena Nordica' as it approached Rosslare Port in Wexford, a row broke out between a group of people on Feb 25, which forced the ship's captain to alert authorities at the port. But a post mortem investigation has found her death was a suspected suicide. She and members of her family had been travelling to a funeral in Kildare before her death. Mary Cash was on the ship with her husband Ned, who was escorting the body of his father Martin Cash in a hearse back to his homeland to be buried. The body was in a hearse on the ferry. They left Fishguard in West Wales on the afternoon of Feb 25, a day after the family held a service at St. Anthony of the Padua Roman Catholic Church in Edgware, North London. The funeral of Martin Cash was delayed a day after the tragic discovery. There are plans for Mary's funeral but they had to wait for the results of her post-mortem to be carried out. The Gardai have yet to establish a sequence of events that led up to the discovery of her body and row on the ferry. The post mortem examination on the deceased woman has been completed, the results of which were not being released for operational reasons. The male arrested in connection with the investigation has been released from detention without charge. A Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) continued to engage with and support the family of the deceased. A Garda Senior Investigating Officer was supervising the completion of an investigation for the purpose of a file to assist a Coroner's Inquest. Woman who died on ferry named

Wed Feb 26 18:25:01 CET 2025 Timsen

The woman whose death on the 'Stena Nordica' was at the centre of a major Garda probe has been named as Mary Cash, an irish national living in the UK, aged 39 years. She was among a group of family and friends who were heading to a funeral in County Kildare, when she was found dead in a bathroom in a cabin of the ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare. The find occurred around 35 miles off the coast of Wexford. The captain radioed an emergency distress call and a large number of gardai – including officers from the Armed Support Unit as well as from the Public order Unit boarded the vessel when it docked. A man was arrested by gardai and was still in custody on Feb 26. A post mortem is taking place this day. At this stage gardai did not believe Ms Cash suffered a violent death. Instead, officers suspected her death was a personal tragedy. Officers are officially treating her death as unexplained.
