One crew member died after jumping off the tanker. The deceased was identified as Sadek Mia, 59, a general steward of the vessel. He died a couple of hours after jumping off. Earlier, the tanker had had loaded 11,055 tonnes of crude oil from the 'Omera Legacy', and was supposed to head towards the jetty. The Bangladesh Coast Guard's fire-fighting boats rushed to the spot and started work to extinguish the fire. At least six boats from the Coastguard, Bangladesh Navy and CPA followed. After the master called "abandon ship", at least 12 crew members jumped into the water. A joint rescue team rescued 36 people from the vessel. The other 12 were fished out of the water by nearby fishing trawlers and the Coastguard. The fire was completely brought under control by 4:00 p.m. The incident came just after the 'Bangla Yyoti' of the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation had caught fire after an explsion. Both the tankers were used for lightering bigger tankers anchored at the outer anchorage, and bringing crude oil to the Eastern Refinery Limited plant. GUIDING STAR H360
An investigation by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has been published regarding the sinking of the Peterhead-based ÄGuiding Star H360' south-east of the Shetland Islands on Oct 6, 2022, after colliding with the partner trawler 'Guiding Light'. It found out that the skipper of the 'Guiding Light' had left the wheelhouse unattended while the two vessels were transferring the cod end and did not perceive the risk of leaving the wheelhouse while in close proximity to the partner vessel.. The bow of the 'Guiding Light' punched a hole in the stern of the 'Guiding Star', flooding the accommodation and causing the vessel to sink. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) report statesd that the skipper was excited to see the catch after several days of intensive fishing and was not in the wheelhouse. The 'Guiding Light’s engineer Kriss Leel received an award for exceptional seamanship for his quick thinking and saving the lives of five fellow fishermen during the incident. The MAIB report makes several recommendations, including how life jackets and survival suits should be better stored, that crews should be informed about what to do in the event of flooding and that the wheelhouse should not be left unattended. GREEN POLE
The 'Kathrin', believed to be carrying explosives intended for Israel, plans to unload part of its cargo in the port of Koper after previously stopping in Montenegro, it was reported on Oct 3. The ship, which departed from Vietnam in mid-July, is carrying eight containers of the explosive hexogen and 60 containers of TNT. According to Slovenia’s Maritime Administration, the vessel’s cargo is also destined for Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, though concerns surrounding the shipment have drawn international attention. Jadran Klinec, director of Slovenia's Maritime Administration, confirmed that the shipowner intends to change the vessel’s flag. However, the process of transferring the ship from the Portuguese registry to another country has not yet been completed. Due to the situation, officials have not been able to provide a precise date for the ship's expected arrival in Koper. The country's authorities have refused to allow the entry into the port of Bar, prompting the vessel to consider docking at the port of Ploce. Currently, the 'Kathrin' has taken down the Portuguese flag and remains in international waters in the southern Adriatic Sea, near Croatian territorial waters by the island of Lastovo. Amnesty International issued a warning on Oct 1, urging both Slovenia and Montenegro to deny the MV Kathrin entry, expressing concern that the ship’s cargo could contribute to potential war crimes, given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The 'Kathrin' was previously prevented from docking in Namibia in August for similar reasons. Slovenia’s Maritime Administration announced that it will not prevent the ship from entering Koper if the appropriate arrival notice is submitted.
TB TSE 3
The 'Sinar Pajajaran' was in collision with the barge 'Soekawati 208', towed by the tug 'TSE 3',, when it arrived at the Outer Buoy (OB) of Banjarmasin on Oct 2, 2024. The vessel began maneuvering to embark the pilot at 1:12 p.m. LT, and by 1:32 p.m. the pilot had boarded in pos. 03°40.719'S 114°28.431' E. The vessel then entered the channel with ebbing currents and wind speeds reaching 32 knots from southeast When approaching pos. 03°32.63'S 114°29.38'E, the tug 'Michelle 219-03', towing the barge 'Jauhar', suddenly altered its course westward to avoid a "zero-zero" situation. The pilot aboard the 'Sinar Pajajaran' communicated via VHF radio, advising the 'Michelle' to maintain a straight course to avoid blocking the channel. Simultaneously, the 'TSE 3', towing the 'Soekaatai 207', was moving out of the channel. The pilot again communicated via VHF radio, instructing the 'TSE 3' to continue pulling straight. However, the barge had already drifted far to the east. With the channel blocked by both the 'Michelle 219-03' and the 'TSE 3', the 'Sinar Pajajaran' was forced to stop its engine and reverse slowly. Despite these efforts, a collision with the barge occurred at pos. 03°32.63'S 114°29.38' E. After the collision, the captain planned to anchor for a damage inspection, but due to the crowded channel, the vessel continued sailing toward the berth at TPK Banjarmasin, noting water ingress in the forepeak tank. After calculating the ship's stability and confirming there was no imminent danger, the captain and pilot proceeded to berth the vessel. At 5:06 p.m. LT, the 'Sinar Pajajaran' safely berthed at TPK Banjarmasin. Once docked, the crew inspected the bow and discovered a leak in the stem post that extended into the forepeak tank, with the damage measuring 4800 mm x 1450 mm. GLEN SANNOX
The sa trials of the 'Glen Sannox' were suspended on Oct 2 following a blackout, caused by an accidental tripping of a fire alarm, which occurred during day three of owner’s trials. Thefalse alarm ultimately resulted in the shutdown of the ship’s main propulsion. The ship was operating on marine gas oil at the time. Checks of the main engines were undertaken, and a soft restart followed. All systems were safely restarted without any adverse effects. However, the trials were temporarily halted. As a precaution, tugs were called to assist. The vessel returned to Inchgreen under it own power with a view to assessing the event and the operation of the fire detection system. The Ferguson Marine Port Glasgow, Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited and CalMac together have agreed that trials remained suspended on Oct 3 with an aim to resume on Oct 4. A solution to the issue with the fire detection system has been put in place. On Sep 30, one of the ferry’s anchors had failed, but it was decided the trial should be continued.

AYA
The Russian missile strike on the 'Aya' on Sep 11 is believed to have been a mistake. The ship, carrying 26,000 tons of grain from Odesa to Egypt, was hit by an AS-4 Kitchen anti-ship missile launched by a Tu-22 Tupolev bomber. However, British military intelligence suggested that the bulk carrier was likely not the intended target. The officials pointed to poor targeting procedures by Russian pilots and the use of aging munitions as the probable cause of the error. The missile’s failure to detonate also helped avoid a potentially catastrophic outcome.
GUARDAMAR CALIOPE
On Oct 2 the 'Guardamar Caliope' and the other involved rescue forces have suspended the search for mortal remains of the shipwreck of a cayuco with at least 84 people on board given the low probability of results, about six kilometres off the coast of the island of El Hierro. On Sep 29 at 4..15 p.m. the crew of a helicopter of the Guardia Civil had located what they initially thought could be the body of a person adrift. The 'Guardamar Calíope' approached the poiision indicated by the coordinates provided to check the information and discovered that it was a cloth bag, a backpack from the remains of the shipwreck. 27 people survived the shipwreck, and nine bodies were recovered. Among the missing were four children.
