Bulkcarrier rescued fishermen off Mahajunga
The "Vita Future" assisted the crew of three, including a Frenchman, of the f/v "Pannagia" and were en route to the port of Morondava after on Sep 11, 2018, a fire broke out on board the Malagasy vessel. The fire was extinguished, but the engine did not work any more and the ship was adrift. The crew radioed a mayday call which was picked up by the naval base of Mayotte on Sep 12 at 5:30 p.m. The CROSS Reunion Island was alerted and contacted the JRCC of Madagascar to set up an operational response. The bulk carrier diverted from her route in order to assist the fishing vessel 50 nautical miles off the coast of Mahajunga. The drifting ship could be located around 1:00 a.m. While the sailors could be saved, their boat drifts in the Mozambique Channel. The Madagascar rescue center dispatched the f/v "Unimar 1" from the Nosy Be fisheries to recover the three survivors. At 5.30 a.m., the fishermen were transhipped and made their way to the port of Morondava.
