Captain sentenced for one year jail
The drunken captain of the "Union Moon" has been jailed for a year on May 31. The 55-year-old Miroslaw Pozniak admitted crashing his cargo boat while 3-times over the alcohol limit. His lawyer told Downpatrick Crown Court that it was because of news of his wife’s ill-health. The married father-of-two was at the helm on March 7th and had no look-out despite the darkness. The judge told Mr. Pozniak that the year-long sentence is to make it clear that the following of the regulations in relation to alcohol and also in relation to the charting and proper adherence to accepted routes is of vital importance. The defendant dropped his head slightly as sentence was passed.
Drunk crash captain to be sentenced
The captain of the "Union Moon" which ran into the "Stena Feronia" in March is due to be sentenced on May 31. Miroslaw Pozniak, who is 55 and Polish, pleaded guilty to charges including having excess alcohol by the master of a ship. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the PSNI are carrying out investigations into the crash. Pozniak, who has his residence in Newtownabbey actually, will appear at Downpatrick Crown Court to be sentenced. His ship is berthed in Belfast since the collision and has not yet been repaired.
