Captain sentenced for one year jail

Thu May 31 21:10:28 CEST 2012 Timsen

The drunken captain of the "Union Moon" has been jailed for a year on May 31. The 55-year-old Miroslaw Pozniak admitted crashing his cargo boat while 3-times over the alcohol limit. His lawyer told Downpatrick Crown Court that it was because of news of his wife’s ill-health. The married father-of-two was at the helm on March 7th and had no look-out despite the darkness. The judge told Mr. Pozniak that the year-long sentence is to make it clear that the following of the regulations in relation to alcohol and also in relation to the charting and proper adherence to accepted routes is of vital importance. The defendant dropped his head slightly as sentence was passed.
