Distressed cargo ship towed to Tallinn
On Jan 8, 2015, around 2 p.m. the "Sylvia" with a cargo of cement and a crew of seven people on board suffered an engine failure in the Gulf of Finland south of Kalbådagrund off Porvoo and went adrift. The ship which had sailed from Liepaja the previous day managed to drop anchor southeast of Kalbåda ground, and the MRCC in Helsinki was alerted. The Coastguard was alerted and helicopters and the Coastguard vessel "Turva" were prepared to take off. In the area winds of 12-14 meters per second were blowing with wave heights of three meters. Around 8 p.m. the Estonian tug "Pallas" started to tow the ship to Tallinn with the "Turva" being ready to assist. The cargo ship was safely berthed at Palkasaare 36 on Jan 9 at 9.15 a.m.
Overheated pipe caused smoke
On June 19, 2014, at 6:06 p.m. alarm was raised in the port Norrköping after a fire broke out in the engine room of the "Sylvia". Fire brigades of three fire stations responded with seven engines and 19 men. The freighter had unloaded a cargo of fertilizer and was berthed at the Supra Quay west of the Händelö Bridge. An examination of the engine revealed that an overheated pipe was the reason for an increase in heat and smoke in the engine room. Emergency services left the scene at 7:15 p.m.
