Lifeboat assisted in tackling fire on historic ferry

On Nov 27, 2024, at 12.56 p.m. the H.M. Coastguard requested the launch of th All Weather lifeboat, '13-32 Ruth & David Arthur' in Exmouth to multiple reports of a vessel on fire on the River Exe, opposite the Starcross railway station. The boat with six volunteer crew onboard, launched shortly after and headed to the Exmouth Marina to pick up members of the Exmouth Fire service and their equipment, supported by the Exmouth Coastguard Rescue team. Having on board the firefighters, the volunteer crew quickly arrived on scene with the historic Starcross to Exmouth ferry 'Princess Marina', which was already well ablaze, and the fire crew proceeded to control the remaining elements of the fire. There were no persons onboard at the time of the incident. Other vessels, including the 'Simon Turl Moorings', were also providing assistance and attempted to control the fire, but the vessel was already too ablaze to prevent its destruction. The Newton Abbot’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) deployed booms around the vessel to contain potential environmental damage, while Urban Search and Rescue teams used drones to survey the area and observe for potential spills. When the fire had been put out, the Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew assisted with placing members of the fire service onto the Exmouth Harbour Masters vessel to secure it under tow and move it to a safe mooring location on the river. The incident was safely concluded at 4.10 p.m., and the RNLI crew then returned the fire crew to the Exmouth Marina before they stood down. The ferry service is operated by the Rackley family, transporting passengers across the Exe Estuary between Starcross and Exmouth. The ferry had come to the end of its operating season, which is typically from April to October, less than a month ago.
