Barge took in water off Rotterdam Hoek

Mon Mar 11 21:15:05 CET 2019 Timsen

The KNRM stations in Lemmer and Urk were alerted in the night of March 10, 2019, around 11 p.m. after the "Bonito", 3071 ts (EU-No.: 02332452), had run into problems on the IJsselmeer enroute from Lelystad to Lemmer with a cargo of clay. The open cargo hold of the ship was filled with water in stormy seas, and the ship began to sink with a crew of three on board. The captain who had hoped to find shelter behind the dike off the Rotterdam Hoeak, deliberately ran the ship head-on against the Northern Dike off the Rotterdam Hoek at Creil, so that the ship could not sink any further. There were more than 300 tons of water in the hold and the forward engine room. Salvage pumps were quickly placed on board the lifeboats "Anna Dorothea" while the "Palace Noordwijk" was heading with full speed to the vessel. By keeping the stern in wind and waves, it was possible to prevent more water from entering. The ship was pumped out by means of three pumps. On March 11 at 2 a.m. it could be refloated and was taken to the breakwater at Rotterdam Hoek. She reached the port of Groningen on March 12 at 6.40 p.m. and continued the passage to Nijmegen.Waterschap Zuiderzeeland has checked the dike for damage, but found none.
