Asylum seekers will once again be accommodated on the 'Alemannia'
Asylum seekers will once again be accommodated on the 'Alemannia' in the Sliksloot Port in Krimpen. This was announced by the municipality of Krimpen aan den IJssel. 150 people will be accommodated there for a period of two years. The Distribution Act came into effect on Feb 1, 2024. This obliges municipalities to create reception locations or exchange them with other municipalities. For Krimpen aan den IJssel, this concerns 164 reception places for asylum seekers. The ship has been providing shelter for asylum seekers since Sep 2022 and was officially in use until Dec 2023, but still offered space for asylum seekers who could not yet move on. Previously, minors were accommodated on the vessel, but the COA considers children on the water 'too vulnerable sot that now only families with adult children and adult men and women will be accomodated on the ship. The municipality is organizing residents' meetings on board the 'Alemannia', on two occasions. The mayor and alderman Van der Wal will then explain the decision and answer questions from local residents. The walk-in times are on Sep 18 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.. River cruise ship remains in Krimpen as asylum ship
The 'Alemannia', which is actually serving as asylum ship in Krimoen, may certainly remain at the Sliksloot Port until July 1, 2023, to continue the reception of refugees for longer. The ship moved from Middelharnis to Krimpen upon IJssel at the start of September 2022. On board there are 150 refugees, mostly mothers, teenagers, children and babies, all from unsafe countries. During the holidays, the ship was briefly in Hellevoet lock to make room for the inland skippers who always moor in Krimpen during Christmas, but then returned. Previously, the Sliksloot Port was also used to receive refugees. In the spring of 2022, there was a cruise ship with about 75 asylum seekers, mainly young men from Syria. Krimpen sees placing refugees on cruise ships as an excellent way to contribute to the distribution of refugees across the country. The condition is, however, that the municipality has as little involvement as possible in this solution and that costs are reimbursed.
Fire in engine room
On July 6, 2019, at 11 a.m. a fire broke out aboard the "Alemannia" which was sailing on the Mosel near Koblenz with 149 persons aboard. A broken hydraulich hose had spilt oil onto hot spaces which ignited. The fire rescue evacuated passengers and crew who were accomodated in a nearby station of the German Red Cross. The fire was quickly extinguished. After the investigations were finished, the sho was released, and the passengers could be embarked again.
