The government of Angola has said it is about to launch a tender for the design, construction and operation of the port of Dande, about 30km north of Luanda. The plan to build the port, complete with special economic zone, was put forward in 2011, after it became apparent that the country’s main port at Luanda was nearing peak capacity. Preliminary work was begun and then suspended owing to lack of public funds and a downturn in trade after the collapse of oil prices. It appeared to be revived last year when former president José Eduardo dos Santos approved a budget of $1.5bn, but it was then cancelled by João Lourenço, who took power after elections in September. Consequently, the programme of expansion of the largest liquefied natural gas terminal at the Baltic Sea entered the construction stage. The above decision means that Polskie LNG can undertake further steps aimed at increasing of the capacity of the terminal in Świnoujście from current 5 billion to 7.5 billion cubic metres per year, what taking into consideration the current market size will mean the capability of satisfying of circa half of the domestic demand for natural gas. China Merchants Port Holdings Co (CMPort) finalized the acquisition of the Australian port of Newcastle, according to the company’s website. Newcastle, located in the state of New South Wales, is the largest port on Australia’s east coast, and the world’s largest coal export port. bThe acquisition of the Australian port expands CMPort’s network to six continents. Marseille Provence in France has welcomed MSC Cruises’ newest ship MSC Seaview during its inaugural call. The arrival was witnessed by Patrick J. Pourbaix, managing director of MSC Cruises, the ship’s captain and Jean-François Suhas, chairman of the Marseille Provence Cruise Club. It was celebrated with a traditional key and plaque ceremony organised by the Marseille Provence Cruise Club. At 323 metres long and 41 metres wide, the cruise ship can carry 5179 passengers with a crew of 1413. Delivered on 4 June by Fincantieri de Monfalcone shipyard in Italy, MSC Seaview is the 15th ship in the MSC Cruises fleet.

A new quay to reduce unloading time of purse seiners and relieve congestion in the Seychelles’ Port of Victoria was officially opened during the weekend. The Ile du Port Handling Services (IPHS) port is a 425-metre commercial fishing quay next to the Port of Victoria. Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism, Port and Civil Aviation, Didier Dogley, said that since the commissioning of part of the quay in January 2016, transactions at the ports have improved significantly. A representative of IPHS, Arthur de Bretagne, said that the new quay “will be a cornerstone for new investments and new businesses dedicated to the fisheries industry.” The IPHS was mandated to construct and manage the quay, undertake stevedoring operations and other related port activities. The port will be transferred to the government after recovery of the construction and financing cost, which amount to $18 million.

ABB has signed a contract with Cochin Shipyard to deliver the first-ever integrated power and automation package to an Indian shipowner. The two new 1,200-passenger ferries will be delivered to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration in 2020. These vessels will feature a fully integrated distribution and propulsion system, enabled by the ABB Ability System 800xA automation onboard. ABB’s supply includes generators, main switchboards, transformers, the power management and propulsion control systems, propulsion motors and drives, as well as the integrated alarm, monitoring and control system (IAMCS). The ferries will be operated by Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) in services connecting mainland India with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal. “These ferries will play a significant part in meeting the demands of the growing local infrastructure and proving transport links within the Bay of Bengal,” said Shri Madhu Nair, chairman ....

Pakistan’s thermal coal importers will have to discharge all of their cargoes at Port Qasim from August, after the country’s Supreme Court banned the unloading of thermal coal at the nearby Karachi port, shipping sources said. A notice has been served to the Karachi Port Trust, the administrator of the country’s largest maritime gateway, saying that only those vessels whose bills of lading have declared Karachi as the port of discharge will be allowed to call until the end of July, a shipping source close to the matter said.

India declared to make Chabahar Port in Iran operational by 2019, regardless of threat of transformed US sanctions against Tehran. Chabahar port complex in Iran is a new transportation access strip for land-locked Afghanistan, which may result in opening way for millions of dollars in trade and cut its dependence on Pakistan. Chahbahar Port is located on the Gulf of Oman and is considered to be Iran’s only oceanic port consisting of two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti each of them containing five berths. It provides Iran access to the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean without having to cross through the bottlenecked Strait of Hormuz. It also opens up doors to take advantage of Indian infrastructure advancements that promise reliable connectivity to Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Costa Cruises and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri have celebrated the official float-out of Costa Venezia, the first ship designed and built specifically for the Chinese market. The US federal government has approved a proposal to allow UAE-based port operator Gulftainer to take control of the Port of Wilmington and develop a new container port at Edgemoor. The federal sign-off means the final terms must now be ratified by the Diamond State Port Corp., the port’s quasi-public operating board. The board already signed off on the basic terms of the agreement earlier this year. Under the terms of the 50-year deal, the state will continue to own the land under the nearly 100-year-old Wilmington port while Gulftainer would take over operations of the facility, which sits at the confluence of the Christina and Delaware rivers.

The keel was laid down for SPIRIT OF DISCOVERY , the first new vessel for the British shipping company SAGA Cruises at the MEYER WERFT shipyard in Papenburg. The first block of the new ship weighs 320 tonnes and is 5.5 metres high, 23.5 metres long and 20 metres wide. This is the first ship of its kind for Great Britain and will be delivered in summer 2019, the company said in its press release.

June 26 (Reuters) – Israel has asked Cyprus to examine the possibility of establishing a shipping point on the island for sending goods to the Gaza Strip, a Cypriot government spokesman said on Tuesday. Goods shipped by sea usually come to an Israeli port and are transferred to Gaza over land. Israel enforces a maritime blockade on Gaza, which it says is meant to prevent weapons from reaching the territory ruled by the Islamist militant group Hamas. Both Egypt and Israel restrict movement across Gaza’s land borders as well. Catching up with the changing time, Visakhapatnam Port Trust is in the process of converting east quay two to five berths built in 1933 into multi-cargo berths by increasing the draft to handle fully-laden Panamax vessels with a deadweight tonnage of two lakh by October. As part of modernisation, the port authorities realised that the berths have turned too old to handle cargo and have completed dismantling them. Now work is at apace to raise the draft from 11 metres to 14.5 metres. “By mobilising resources from internal accruals, we want to develop two Panamax compatible berths at cost of Rs. 190.5 crore,” VPT Deputy Chairman P.L. Haranadh has told The Hindu. The new berths will have a capacity to handle 6.45 million tonne per annum. Ships with overall length of 230 metres can be navigated easily overcoming the restrictions due to the channel. Cargoes like steel, granite, foodgrains and project equipment and material are expected. After completion, according to sources, the port may entrust the job of managing the berths on operation and management contract or tonnage basis by floating tenders. One of the old berths has the glorious history of receiving passenger ship S.S. Jaladurga.

The chaotic traffic situation at the seaports in Lagos has resulted in about 1100 percent hike in the cost of transportation of imported goods from the ports in Apapa to surrounding towns in Lagos. Vanguard’s finding revealed that transportation of a 20 feet container from Apapa to Ikeja which used to be N25,000 has now risen to about N300,000. Confirming the above, President/CEO of NICSOL Worldwide Investment Limited, Mr. Nicodemus Odolo, said the bad roads have affected the movement of goods to and from the port as well as the cost of movement of consignments to and from the port.
