MSC Chicago rescued crew of sailing vessel in distress

Mon May 13 21:32:40 CEST 2013 Timsen

The Coast Guard and the "MSC Chicago" rescued four sailors approximately 350 miles southeast of Cape Cod, Mass., at approximately 9:30 p.m. on May 12, 2013. Watchstanders from the 1st Coast Guard District command center in Boston were notified at approximately 5:20 p.m. of a distress call from a Canadian-registered 406 MHz emergency position indicating radio beacon registered to the "Romarin II". The Coast Guard verified the registration with the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and contacted the vessel's owner. The sailing vessel "Romarin II" had been chartered and was enroute to Quebec, Canada from the Caribbean when it became demasted and disabled. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, a HU-25 Falcon jet crew immediately launched and located the "Romarin II". The falcon crew dropped a self-locating datum marker buoy and radio to the crew, but was unable to establish communications. The Coast Guard contacted Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System vessels in the area to assist. The "MSC Chicago" was approximately 30 miles away and responded. The "MSC Chicago" arrived on scene at 9:30 p.m. and safely rescued the four sailors. The sailors will continue to the "MSC Chicago"'s next port-of-call in Gioia Taruo, Italy, where they would be able to return to Canada. Record breaking port calls

Mon Aug 29 10:10:01 CEST 2011 Timsen

The largest container ship to enter any South African port on normal business becmae the "MSC Chicago" which has completed a call at Ngqura in the Eastern Cape and was due in Durban in the morning of Aug 29, 2011. In a PR exercise Transnet National Ports Authority has arranged for one of the port’s three women pilots that hold open licences to bring the large ship in, with media apparently invited to the ship later in the day. The pilot selected was Pinky Zungu. Earlier the ship called at Port Louis on 20 August, becoming the biggest container ship to call at the Mauritian port.
