Container ship involved in allision

Fri Jun 04 10:04:46 CEST 2021 Timsen

In the port of Kaohsiung, the neo-panamax 'OOCL Durban' allided with the 'YM Constancy', which was docked at berth 70 of the OOCL Container Terminal, before its accommodation block hit a gantry crane on the quay causing it to collapse and topple another nearby crane on June 3, 2021, at 11.30 a.m. One shore worker was injured, and two crane operators were trapped in the debris. The crane operators were freed after one hour and were safe. The accident seemed to have been caused by a navigational misjudgement, while the 'OOCL Durban' was headind to berth No. 66 under conduct of a pilot. The 'YM Constancy' did not suffer serious damage and left the port the same evening towards Hong Kong with an ETA as of June 4. A worker in crane 8 suffered a cut on his arm and was rushed to Ruan General Hospital. Two maintenance personnel in crane 6 who were trapped for a while were rescued with no injuries. The two collapsed gantry cranes cost about $20 million USD. The site of the collapse of the gantry crane at Pier 70 has been blocked, and loading, unloading operations at Pier 70 was currently suspended.
