Container barge allided with bridge

Wed Jan 22 09:23:36 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Were Di" allided with the Steenbrugge bridge in the morning of Jan 21, 2014, enroute from Ghent to Zeebrugge. One of the containers on the ship fell into the canal. The bridge had opened to let the ship through, but it hit the bridge with its starboard side. The containers began to shift, and one of them went over board. The bridge was out of operation for some time, but the fault could be rectified within short time. The vessel was berthed at a nearby quay. The empty container floated in the canal until it was secured at port side of the "Were Di" by the ship's crew. The ship continued its voyage the same day and berthed at the Container Handling Zeebrugge in the Albert II Dock at 8.20 p.m. The accident seems to have been caused by a wrong estimation of the skipper.
