Grounding on the Rhine at Mannheim

Tue Sep 11 11:47:49 CEST 2018 Timsen

On Sep 11, 2018, at 12.40 p.m. the "Viking Tialfi", being enroute from Basel to Amsterdam, ran aground on the Rhine at Mannheim short before berthing in the Luitpold Port with 185 passengers on board. The accident happened during a turning manoever to get berthed with the bow downstream. The ship instead got stuck on a sand bar in pos. 49° 28.52' N 008° 27.61' E. Aronud midday the passengers were to be taken off by another passenger ship, the "Viking Fir", and taken to the shore at Mannheim. The plan failed due to the low water level. Then the Dutch barge "Johanna" (MMSI: 244690797) came to assist and pulled the ship off. After the cruise ship got stuck outside the fairway, passing traffic meanwhile was not affected. At 1.25 p.m. the Rhine was completely barred for traffic at the grounding site for the salvage work. The cruise ship berthed in Mannheim after having been refloated and then proceeded to Rüdesheim.
