Barge of Veerhaven X wedged with self propelled barge on the Waal

Wed Nov 23 22:00:50 CET 2011 Timsen

On Nov 23, 2011, at 3.30 p.m. the "Veerhaven X - Orca" underway with four barges ,and the "Kelaniya", 1442 ts (EU-No.: 04002570), were in a head-on-collision in dense fog on the Waal at km 870 near Doornenburg between Gendt and Millingen close to the Vahali Yard. The "Kenaniya" which was carrying a cargo of 900 tons coal was in danger of sinking and was abandoned. The first barge pushed by the "Veerhafen 10" was wedged to the foreship. A German vessel with dewatering pumps was able to stabilize the ship. The Waal was closed for ship traffic until the salvage work was completed which might last until midnight.
