SMS Towage expansion continues with new tug christening

Mon Aug 25 10:33:59 CEST 2014 arnekiel

Yorkshire (UK) based SMS Towage Ltd have marked the entry into service of the latest addition to their expanding fleet with the naming of the ASD tug Yorkshireman. The latest addition to the fleet, Yorkshireman, is one of four similar Robert Allan designed ASD tugs and now part of the SMS Towage fleet, built by Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar (the other three Masterman, Scotsman and Statesman). SMS director Gareth Escreet describes them as: “small, compact and powerful tugs” adding: “They have the power to berth the large bulk carriers and tankers onto the riverside terminals and they have the manoeuvrability to handle the more intricate operations guiding vessels into and out of Hull and Immingham Docks”. The Yorkshireman is a Robert Allan Ulupinar 24/50 design (ex Ulupinar XIII) with a LOA of 24.39m, breadth 9.15m and draught of 4.4m on a GT figure of 144.26t and classed by Lloyds Register. The vessel’s main engines comprise two Caterpillar 3512HP diesels, each 1,500bhp (1,118kW) with a total output of 3,200bhp (2,386kW). Performance figures are stated as 50tbp and a speed of 13 knots. Propulsion is from two Rolls-Royce azimuthing stern drive units and auxiliary power provided by two Perkins 4TMG 74kva engines. A single Minimax fire monitor is included with a capacity of 500m3/hr supplied by a SMS axially split centrifugal pump (capacity 650m3/hr). The fire protection provision also included a water curtain around the accommodation. Yorkshireman is able to transfer fuel up to 15m3/hr and fresh water up to 25m3/hr.
