The 'Sea Hermes', enroute from Arroyo Seco to Gdynia, suffered a propulsion failure on Feb 22, 2020, at 6.30 p.m in the English Channel north of Cape Gris-Nez, Pas-de-Calais in pos. 51 08 20 N, 001 38 40 E. The vessel had a crew of 22 on board and was carrying a cargo of 49.640 tonnes cargo of soya bean meal. After the ship suddenly reduced its speed the CROSS Gris Nez contacted the ship which declared that they suffered damage to their engine. The bulk carrier was then 6.3 nautical milesnorth of Cape Gris-Nez in the Pas-de-Calais traffic separation scheme. The weather in the area: was west-southwest winds of 29 knots and rough seas. At 10:09 p.m., the ship reported the repairs had failed and requested authorization to anchor as well as requesting assistance from a tug. The CROSS Gris Nez therefore deployed the emergency tug 'Abeille Languedoc' chartered by the French Navy to assist. At 12:02 a.m., a Dauphin helicopter of the French Navy was sent by the CROSS to deploy an intervention team consisting of a pilot from Dunkirk station and the second captain of the 'Abeile Languedoc' aboard the bulk carrier. The team’s mission was to ensure the crew’s ability to repair the damage and get a safe tow. At 1 a.m. tthe drifting vessel entered English waters 17 nautical miles north of Cape Gris-Nez. The ship, on the advice of the English Coast Guard, decided to reach an anchorage in Dungeness Bay with the help of the tug. At 5:13 a.m., the pilot of the port of Dunkirk was disembarked from the ship by the Dauphin helicopter of the French Navy base in Dunkirk. The second captain of the tug remained still on board. At 7:41 a.m., the 'Abeille Languedoc' started towing the bulk carrier safely. The convoy was expected to arrive at the anchorage in Dungeness Bay around 11:00 p.m. The ship sailed again from the bay on Feb 25 and finally berthed at Szwedzkie in Gdynia on March 3 at 4.10 p.m. French report with photo: https://www.premar-manche.gouv.fr/communiques-presse/remorquage-d-un-vraquier-en-difficulte-dans-le-dst-du-pas-de-calais
