Trawler in collision with iceberg

Wed Dec 02 11:20:33 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Stefnir" was in collision with an iceberg west of Dýrafirði in the evening of Nov 30, 2015. The ship returned to Ísafjarðar in the morning of Dec 1. Captain Peter Birgisson stated to have underestimated the situation as he did not expect icebergs in shallow waters as he was pulling in in the darkness. Fortunately the trawler had a speed of only three knots. After the impact the ship went full astern despite the fact that the gear was behind the trawler, and thereby allowing the risk of gear getting entangled into the propeller. The ship suffered a significant dent in the hull above the waterline, and fragments of icebergs fell onto the stern and were brought to land in the morning. The captain immediately contacted the Coast Guard command center to let them know of icebergs and broadcast a warning. The damage to the trawler was inspected and assessed whether the vessel must immediately get repaired.
