Tanker rescued distressed sailors

Sat May 02 12:55:43 CEST 2020 Timsen

The 'Magellan Spirit' was one of the AMVER ships the US Coast Guard contacted for the rescue of two British mariners 598 miles off the coast of Bermuda in the morning of May 1, 2020. Watchstanders at the Fifth Coast Guard District command center received the initial call from the British MRCC on April 29, at 7:43 a.m., who reported that a 39-foot sailboat had become disabled due to a non-functional steering box with two persons aboard. The Fifth District command center activated the AMVER System to alert vessels in the area to the emergent situation and request assistance from them. The m/v 'Torm Laura' answered the call and diverted to the disabled sailing vessel on May 30, but was unable to enact a rescue operation due to the heavy seas, and eventually departed from the scene. The next morning, two additional AMVER vessels arrived on scene, besides the 'Magellan Spirit', which had been enroute from Port Arthur to Rotterdam, the m/v 'Ethane Sapphire' which gave shelter from the wind while the crew of the 'Magellan Spirit' launched a small boat and safely recovered the yachties who were transferred onto the tanker. The vessel was left adrift with navigation lights on and the AIS activated so the vessel will be able to be tracked for any future recovery operations. LNG tanker refloated after 18 days

Fri Jan 23 11:15:34 CET 2015 Timsen

The "Magellan Spirit" has been refloated after 18 days stuck in the mud off Bonny island after the ship-to-ship cargo transfer to the "Excellence" has been completed successfully. A favourable tide helped the operation. The LNG carrier Mwas now anchored to undergo inspection. No damage was so far found to the vessel and it was prepared to backload the cargo and continue its voyage. The vessel was fixed on a three-year charter to Vitol.

Lightering going on

Thu Jan 22 12:02:39 CET 2015 Timsen

No refloating attempt for the "Magellan Spirit", still grounded in soft mud off the Nigeria LNG Terminal in Bonny, would be undertanken as long as a ship-to-ship (STS) cargo transfer was ongoing. The "Excellence" of Excelerate Energ was on the scene to lighter the vessel with the intention to reload the cargo afterwards. Four tugs will assist the refloating operation possibly on Jan 23. It would be the second attempt to free theLNG carrier with the first taking place on Jan 12. When the operation has been completed, the ship was to be moved to a safe anchorage where a full inspection would be undertaken.
