Fire off Aarhus
On June 17, 2019, at 10.40 p.m. a fire broke out aboard the "Key Light" off Aarhus. The police and fire brigade East Jutland were alerted to the ship which was about one kilometer from the Port of Aarhus, when a chemical fire occurred. The crew of 23 chad in vain tried to extinuish the fire in two barrels with phosphorus hydrogen which developed toxic gas which can be extremely difficult to handle. The special unit Vest was transferred aboard with a pilot boat from Aarhus, and the fire was brought under control at 2 a.m. with cement powder. The explosion was caused by the pressure in the bin due to lack of ventilation. The bin was ventilated, and temperatures were monitored. The ship was moored on the port's anchorage in pos. 56° 8.45' N 010° 16.80' E. The vessel had berthed in Aarhus on June 6 at 06.50 a.m. with a cargo of around 28.000 metric tonnes of Brazilian Hipro Soyabean Meal. Upon hatch opening and cargo inspection it was revealed that the cargo was infested by insects and was subject to fumigation prior to discharging. The cargo was fumigated on June 7. and the vessel was shifted from its berth to an anchorage outside the port for de-fumigation. The de-fumigation was due to commence on June 17. It seemed the fumigation substance phosphor had caught fire in two drums, but not in the cargo.
