Drunken master fined for collision
The master of the "Ronita" was sentenced to pay 1800 Euro and three years prison with a probation time of two years and was prohibitied to enter Dutch ports for two years at the Middelburg Magistrate on Nov 9, 2012. On May 24 the Belgian man was found to be drunk when the "Ronita" ran into the tanker "Polargas" which was loaded with 10,034 tons of ammonia on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. The "Ronita" also hit the pusher tug "Henry VII" at the Yara fertilizer plant in the Has Port before coming to a standstill on the banks. A breathalyzer test revealed that the master of the "Ronita" had consumed almost five times more than the permitted amount of alcohol. The punishment was equal to the demand of the prosecutor.
Master of Ronita arrested after collision
The LNG-tanker "Polargas" was in collision with the "Rhonita" on the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal in the night of May 24, 2012. The collision took place around 6.15 hours in Sluiskil. The emergency services were put on high alert because the "Polargas" was carrying ammonia and LNG. The "Ronita" was coming from Ghent. Further investigation revealed that there was no evidence of leakage of hazardous substances, and the alarm was scaled down at 6.30 p.m. again. Rijkswaterstraat and the police took care of the "Ronita" shich was moored at the Kanaal Way. The "Polargas" was taken in tow by some tugs of Multraship and berted at the at the Industrie Way in Terneuzen.
