Boat damaged and set adrift by burglars

Sun Feb 05 10:02:25 CET 2012 Timsen

A failed theft attempt sent the "Ragni Berg" onto the rocks of Askøy in the morning of Feb 4, 2012. The rescue boat had disappeared from the Skjøndals Slip & Mekanisk Verksted at Damsgård in Bergen, where it was getting overhauled. It turned out that someone had broken into the boat and had let the boat go adrift then. The second Bergen-boat, the "Kristian Gerhard Jebsen", pulled the casualty off and dragged it back to shore. It turned out that the thieves also had destroyed the boat's interior. The boat was safely moored and the case is now under investigation of Hordaland police. It looked like the thieves had started the boat, but the engine then had suffered a breakdown, and they have used the dinghy toget back to shore, and the lifeboat went adrift. After the boat was moored, divers found out that the propeller was damaged and the hull dented, so that the ship will have to be drydocked for repairs. It had been scheduled to return to its station on Feb 7, but this will have to be postpooned.
