Greenpeace entered drilling platform near Borkum

Wed Jun 05 08:52:13 CEST 2024 Timsen

The highest Dutch court has issued a temporary halt to construction on a gas well near Borkum on June 4, 2024. Greenpeace had previously protested on the drilling platform. The German Environmental Aid (DUH) , along with other partner organizations, had submitted an urgent application against the planned drilling. The court followed this. A final decision will be made next week after a hearing. The DUH accuses the energy company One-Dyas and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of circumventing a previous court-ordered halt to construction by amending the permit. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs cleared the way for the controversial project on on May 29 after One-Dyas had made adjustments to the environmental requirements for the construction work in accordance with a previous court order. The 'Prospector 1' was brought by One-Dyas to the planned extraction site northwest of Borkum on the night of June 3 to start preparatory work for natural gas extraction. Greenpeace members protested against this on the morning of Juen 4. Some activists secured themselves to a platform and prevented the preparatory work from starting. One-Dyas reacted with incomprehension to the action, but assured that it would do everything to ensure the safety of the activists and the crew. One-Dyas announced last week that it was sticking to the goal of producing the first natural gas this year.
