Princess refloated, Elbe remains closed

Mon May 30 21:42:14 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Princess" could unexpectedly refloated on May 30. But the waterway remained closed because the ship's own refloating attempt caused sand accumulations which first will have to be removed by a dredger in the forthcoming days. The ship had run aground with 87 passengers and a crew of 18 underway to Magdeburg when it ran aground the previous day due to a river tide of only 1,30 metres which was also the vessel's draught. Low river tide caused grounding

Mon May 30 10:50:42 CEST 2011 Timsen

The "Princess" ran aground on the Elbe near Wittenberg on May 29, 2011. The ship was only slightly damaged, but attempts to refloat it failed so far. The ship is resting perpendicular to the current thus blocking the river. Ballastwater was released and the passengers disembarked in order to reduce the draught, but without success. Now a rise of the tide of 25 centimetres was awaited in order to pull of the ship with a tug. Due to the low tide the passengers had already been embarked in Dresden instead of Prague. The ship has a draught of 1,20 metres. German report with photos: http://www.mz-web.de/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=ksta/page&atype=ksArtikel&aid=1300342892259
