Lock allision in Brunsbüttel

Sun Apr 22 13:32:15 CEST 2018 Timsen

The "Rauli N" allided with the side wall of the new Southern lock of the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel upon leaving the lock on Apr 21, 2018, at 1 p.m. When the port side stern crashed against the wall, it suffered considerable damage. Parts of the wall broke off and submerged within the lock which was barred for shipping after the accident. The "Rauli N" which had sailed from Kolding on Apr 20 at 6.30 p.m. was allowed to continue the voyage to Bremen at 3 p.m. despite dents and a breach in the hull. She berthed in the Hütten Port on Apr 22 at 4 a.m., where the investigations were continued. Possibly a wind gust had caught the vessel and pushed it into the wall. The debris will be removed from the lock only on Apr 23 as no personnel and equipment was available at the weekend. The "Tolten" left Bremen again after repairs on 25 at 10 a.m. and headed Weser downstream towards the Northsea. The lock damasged by the bulkcarrier in Kiel could be reopened for ship traffic on Apr 23 at 3 p.m. following the removal of debris. The "Rauli N" arrived in Ravenna on May 8.
