Seven hostages released
The Russian foreign Ministry announced on Aug 27 that, as a result of the joint efforts of the diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Abuja, the Nigerian official authorities and the representative of the ship owner, seven Russian crew members abducted from the 'Curacao Trader' on July 17, 2020 during a pirate attack in the Gulf of Guinea, have been released. Currently, they were at the regional headquarters of the Nigerian Navy in Port Harcourt. They will have to undergo a medical examination before returning to Russia. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, their health is satisfactory.
15 crew members taken hostage
The 'Curacao Trader' has been attacked by pirates on July 17, 2020, arodun 11 a.m. in the Gulf of Guinea, about 230 miles south of Lagos. The tanker was en route from Lome at that time. The pirates boarded tanker and kidnapped 15 crew members, believed to be of Russian and Ukrainian nationalities. The AIS was off after the pirates boarded tanker and reappeared 6.50 p.m. The ship was drifting with limited man power on board. Immediate assistance has been secured from the nearby reeder 'Frio Chikuma'. On July 19 at 7.50 p.m. the tanker dropped anchor off Cotonou in pos. 06° 17.08' N 002° 29.84' E.
