PERSEUS

Wed Feb 20 11:44:20 CET 2019 Timsen

On Feb 19, 2019, the Dutch container barge "Olesia", 6150 gt (IMO: 2293962), coming from Antwerp with the barge "Olesia II" (EU-No.: 02325909; MMSI-No.: 244150822), was in collision with the "Perseus", which had sailed from Rotterdam, on the Easter Scheldt halfway between Ouwerkerk and Stavenisse. The "Olesia" suffered damage and headed, escorted by Rijkswaterstaat, towards the Krammer Lock in Bruinisse, Zeeland, where the police launched an investigation. On Feb 20 at 8.40 a.m. the "Olesia" berthed in Krimpen/Rotterdam. The "Perseus" berthed in Hans Weert at 8.50 p.m. and arrived in Terneuzen on Feb 21 at 8.40 a.m. The collision was caused by poor communication. The skippers of both vessels wanted to cross each other between Ouwerkerk and Stavenisse, but had no contact in advance about their course. One skipper thought that the other ship would continue to follow a certain course, so that he could continue like this, the other navigated on assumptions too, but they have not verified this together. When they realized that things went wrong, it was already too late. Investigations were launched against both skippers as they have probably violated several articles of the inland police regulations. The Public Prosecution Service turned to the case.
