Hydrauic fog disabled trawler
On Juni 18, 2019, short before midnight the crew of two of the "Ozean - SD 9", 71 gt (IMO: 1300234), reported smoke development in the engine room to the MRCC in Bremen. The ship was north of the Great Vogelsand in the Elbe estuary, and the fishermen presumed a fire in the engine room. The MRC alerted the lifeboat "Hermann Marwede" of the station Heligoland, the "Anneliese Kramer" of the station Cuxhaven and the "Theodor Storm" of the station Büsum. The latter took on board a fire fighting unit of the fire brigade Cuxhaven. Two nearby trawlers, the "Doggerbank" and "Delphin" went on standby upon receiving the distress call in order to be able to evacuate the crew of the "Ozean" if necessary. While it turned out that it was hydraulic oil fog which was behind the smoke development, the disabled "Ozean" was drifting towards the sand bank. The three lifeboats arrived at the trawler almost at the same time. The "Delphin" recovered the nets of the vessel which had been slipped by the crew of the "Ozean" for safety reasons. The "Theodor Storm" took the casualty in tow which was not an easy task as the outriggers were still hanging over board due to the hydraulic failure. Finally a towing connection was established, and during the tow to the port of Büsum also the fishing gear could be recovered, making it possible to pass the harbour locks. The "Theodor Storm" then assisted the "Paul Neisse" getting the vessel berthed at the harbour islandon June 19 at 6 a.m. On scene were winds of three Beaufort and good visibility.
