Boat towed to Kirkwall

Sun Mar 21 18:02:30 CET 2021 Timsen

The 'Nigg Bay' with three crew on board suffereed a loss of electrical power and engine power in position 59 04 39 N, 002 54 52 W, on March 20, 2021, at 8.20 a.m. about 5,6 miles Northnortheast of Kirkwall. The lifeboat from Kirkwall was alerted and lunached with Coxswain Stewart Ryrie and six volunteer crew onboard. It headed for a position West of the Galt Point, Shapinsay, and arrived on scene seven minutes later where they found the vessel's crew had deployed their anchor. Ten minutes after arriving, and with a tow attached the lifeboat headed for Kirkwall in freshening weather, both vessels arrived safely at the Kirkwall marina 40 minutes later, where the casualty was secured safely alongside. Then the crew discovered the propeller had been fouled by some old ropes which had made the vessel loose power. The lifeboat was back alongside her berth refuelled and ready for service again at 09.45 a.m.
