Forelle salvaged after collision with Niedersachsen 2

Mon Sep 05 09:30:50 CEST 2011 Timsen

On Sep 3, 2011, the "Forelle" which had been run over by the "Niedersachsen 2" on Aug 29, 2011, was successfully raised and taken to the Hitzler Yard Lauenburg for surveys. The starboard side was severely damaged. On Sep 3 workers of the Geesthacht Shipping Authority had been able to raise the "Forelle" so far that the hull could be stepwise dewatered. In the evening a boat of the police escorted the "Forelle" during the tow to Lauenburg. Niedersachsen 2 sank Forelle

Mon Aug 29 22:15:57 CEST 2011 Timsen

Two employees of the Water and Shipping Authority Hamburg (WSA) were saved, but shocked, after their barge "Forelle" sank in the Elbe after she had gotten off course due to technical problems and was hit by the self propelled barge "Niedersachsen". The sunken barge transported sediment dredged from the bottom of the Elbe and ran directly across the bow of the "Niedersachsen 2". The freighter probably ripped the air tank of the "Forelle" which can hold 173 cubic meters of sand, causing a sudden water ingress. The "Forelle" was run aground in a groin field at a pump storage plant where it capsized. Powerful pumps will now be used to pump out the half submerged "Forelle" and get the barge then towed to the Hitzler Werft Lauenburg.
