Cement carrier in trouble

Fri Mar 14 10:25:27 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Cembay" got in trouble at the quay of Norcem in Kjøpsvik in the evening of Mar 13, 2014, due to stormy winds with gusts upto 25 m/sec, as the mooring ropes broke. Early in the morning of Mar 14, the situation could be resolved as the ship was towed out to sea. Divers were called to examine the hull of the ship. The police had initiated several measures such as warning Tysfjord, asking tem to be prepared in case something happened. The fire department had oil drainage equipment ready in case the situation deteriorated. Three tugs were dispatched to Kjøpsvik from Narvik, Harstad and Sortland as well as the pilot from Bodø. The weather was still bad with strong winds and high waves. Also the "UBC Cartageno" had broken off its moorings. One of the cement carriers had finished unloading in Kjøpsvik , and the other was half loaded. Both ships were scheduled to leave Kjøpsvik once the weather eased on Mar 14.
