Hovercraft damaged in collision

Fri Jan 12 10:50:08 CET 2018 Timsen

On Jan 10, 2018, the "Umoe Rapid" was docked at the NG Shipyards in Lauwersoog for repairs of a large gash in the foreship at starboard side. The boat was severely damaged on that evening in an accident on the North Sea. None of the Danish crew members were injured in the accident. They did not know what hit them on their route between the Eemshaven and the German wind farm off Borkum. A large bite of the styrofoam appeared to have broken out and had disappeared into the sea. As a result, the boat no longer floated well on the water. Fortunately the hovercraft could still reach the port of Lauwersoog at very low speed. All the air escaped from the air cushion underneath the vessel. In Lauwersoog, two mobile cranes lifted the crew boat from the water. The repair will take some weeks as first new parts were being built in Norway and China. The works were completed on Jan 27. The ship the same day headed to Borkum, remaining there until Feb 7 when it proceeded to Cuxhaven, arriving there at 8.45 a.m. and heading towards the Northsea at 6.45 p.m. Dutch report with photo: https://www.omropfryslan.nl/nieuws/782980-hovercraft-met-gat-boeg-naar-scheepswerf-lauwersoog
