Freighter troubled in the Westerems
On Feb 25, 2020, around 8 a.m. the 'Merita' suffered rudder trouble on the Westerems west of Borkum island and was threatened to run aground in nine Beaufort winds and wave heights of 6-7 meters. The ship was enroute from Papenburg, where it had sailed at 1.30 a.m., to Liepaja. The Central Commnd for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven coordinated the response. The crew carried out an emergency anchoring manoever during which the ability to manoever could be restorred. The tug 'Waterstroom' escorted the ship until it had left the Ems area. At 1 p.m. the Central Commnd for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven terminated the response.
Faulty loaded timber fixed in Kiel
On Apr 4, 2014, the "Merita" was ordered back to Kiel by the water police for fixing faulty loaded timber on the cargo deck after transiting the Kiel Canal. The vessel was en route from Jaunmilgravja Ostas Kompan in Riga where it had sailed on Apr 2 at 5 p.m. The ship was stopped in the locks of the Kiel-Canal in Holtenau at 3.40 p.m. The master planned to fix the cargo in Rendsburg, but due to a lack of crane capacity in the communal port his ship was ordered to call at the at East Shore Port in Kiel to get things done. It berthed at 8.50 p.m. and resumed its voyage on Apr 5 at 3 p.m. bound for Ijmuiden with an ETA of Apr 6, 8. p.m.
Grounding in Rostock
On Jan 9, 2014, at 9.25 p.m. the "Merita" ran aground while entering the port of Rostock, due to an engine failure. The strong west wind pushed the ship into the eastern embankment of the sea canal. Two tugs pulled off the vessel and towed it to port. The ship was detained until surveys of the hull were carried out by divers on Jan 10.
