Grounding on the Rhine
On Oct 24, 2013, at 7.30 p.m. a Dutch barge train consisting of the "Esperanto", 3549 ts (EU-No.: 02324538) and "Esperanto 2", 2480 ts (EU-No: 02318489), ran aground on the Rhine at Oestrich Winkel sailing river downstream with a cargo of gravel. The accident happened when a vessel running river upstream passed the two vessels and sucted the water away. First the ships got stuck and then drifted against a fairway buoy which was torn off before getting finally stuck. Two tugs in vain traied to refloat the vessels, but the work was abandoned at 11.45 p.m. They did not affect the Rhine traffic as they were outside the fairway. The police Rüdesheim launched an investigation.
