On March 23, 2024, the captain of the 'Med Arctic', which was anchored off Huelva, requested the urgent medical evacuation of a crew member after consultation with Turkish radio medical center. Two gates damaged in allision
Two gates of the middle lock of Ijmuiden were damaged by the allision of the "Med Arctic" on Nov 1. Rijkswaterstaat initially reported that one of the two revolving gates facing each other was damaged, but both doors now appear to be crooked. From Nov 4 to Nov 5 the gates are to be replaced with reserve gates which are always stored in the lock complex. In the night of Nov 3 a floating crane arrived to hoist the damaged gates. Vessels will have to take the Northern lock which may cause longer waiting times. The "Med Arctic" was moved to the seaward side of the central lock in the afternoon of Nov 2 after Rijkswaterstaat has got a guarantee by the shipowner to pay for the damage. The amount of damage will be only fixed following further examinations to the mechanical system, which allows the doors to move. On Nov 3 the ship sailed to Amsterdam. Damaged lock out of service for at least one week
The middle lock of IJmuiden will be out of service for one week. The "Med Arctic" remaines in the lock until the amount of damage is assessed. The Ooms Construction BV from Averhorn which is taking care of the locks estimated the damage to be at least one million Euro bedraagt. It was thought that the "MEd Arctic" encountered engine problems keeping it from going astern in time and running into the gate thus. Divers of Wals Diving & Marine Service from IJmuiden surveyed the damage caused by the bulbous bow of the tanker.
