Rhine traffic floating again
After the grounding of the "Maranta I", 2379 ts (EU-No.: 02322959) and the barge "Maranta II", 2129 ts (EU-No.: 02323080) on the Deutzer Plate off the Severins Bridge at Cologne on the Rhine, ship traffic was floating free again on June 25 at 3.45 p.m. The British river cruise ship River Cloud 2" (MMSI-No: 232122001), which had been hit by the "Maranta II" after its anchors dragged following the disconnection of the pusher barge, continued its voyage on June 25 at 4.30 p.m. enroute to Utrecht where the ship berthed on June 26 at 5.40 a.m. None of its 87 passengers had been injured apart from the shock when the barge bumped into it. The "River Cloud II" only suffered dents and scratches, the same was true for the barge. The water level on the Rhine was actually only 1,58 meters at the grounding site. The Dutch master of the "Maranta I" was no facing charges by the police in Cologne. Rhine traffic floating again
The "Maranta I" and "Maranta II" were pulled off the Deutzer Plate in the afternoon of June 25, after the cargo was partially lightered by the "Kraanvogel". Ship traffic was being no longer hampered, but the grounding site still had to be sounded for shallows. Maranta aground on the Rhine
Coming from Bonn, the Dutch flagged, self propelled barge "Maranta I", 2379 ts (EU-No.:: 02322959), jointly with the barge "Maranta I", 2129 ts (EU-No.: 02323080) ran aground on the Deutzer Plate off the Severins Bridge at Cologne on the Rhine in the early morning of June 25, 2014. During an attempt to get off with own power, the lighter pushed by the "Maranta I" was in collision with the passenger m/v "Rivercloud". At 5.30 a.m. a lighter connected to the barge was disconnected, but drifted perpendicular and hit the British river cruise ship River Cloud 2" (MMSI-No: 232122001), which, however, only suffered scrapes, while a radar antenna aboard the lighter was bent. The ship traffic was allowed to pass the grounding site with slow speed. Traffic would have to be interrupted completely during salvage work in the foremidday. The river authority Cologne dispatched the dredger ship "Kranvogel" to lighter the cargo.
