Tank barge repaired after allision

Wed May 03 20:37:18 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Maria Valentine" which was severely damaged in a lock allision at Grave on Dec 29, 2016, has been repaired during the recent months and started operating again as "Magellan" for the Normannia company in Hamburg. The accident in Grave caused a million Euro damage in the region. The Meuse had not been navigable for weeks, houseboats were lying obliquely and companies could not be supplied. Also tThe damage to the tanker was relatively complicated. The upper deck was broken, including the wheelhouse, but under the waterline there was no major damage. The ship left Rotterdam afer completition of repairs on Apr 24, 2017, and headed for Giessendam as first port of call. Tank barge lost wheelhouse already in allision in October 2016

Thu Jan 19 10:46:32 CET 2017 Timsen

The 52 year old, Slovakian skipper who was at the helm of the "Maria Valentine" when she allided with the weir at Grave, was already involved in an allision with the same ship two months before. On Oct 22, 2016, the barge lost its wheelhouse when she slammed into the Sterkrade Bridge on the Rhine-Herne Canal in Oberhausen. The allision had been caused by a technical defect, according to the police in Essen, which investigated the accident. The hydraulic system had not functioned satisfactory. The "Maria Valentine" was fitted out with a prefabricated wheelhouse short time later. The cause of the allision on Dec 29 on the Maas was still unknown. In dense fog the tanker ran straight through the steel dam at Grave, pushing it three meters down. Because it did not break completely, Grave and nearby Nederasselt escaped a disaster.
