Occupy Wall Street Campaign against Maersk ship in the USA
Protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement will now focus on the shipping world. Protesters are expected to appear on Maersk's port facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Tuesday, prior to the container ship Maersk Carolina's arrival at the port. The movement has launched a so-called "Block-the-Boat" campaign in both New Jersey and Charleston, South Carolina, where the ship arrives after leaving New York. This is in protest against the transportation of the U.S. retail giant Walmart. Maersk Line North America declined to comment on how the event could come to influence the activities of the port, but according to director Chuck Carmichael from Inchcape Shipping Services, it is not likely that it will interfere very much, because activists do not have access to the port terminal area. The protesters claim that Maersk Carolina has clothing in the load from a Bangladesh factory owner whose factory in late November was exposed to fire with 112 casualties. After the fire accident Walmart announced that the plant was no longer authorized to provide clothing for the company, but an investigation by the New York Times found that five of the plant's 14 production lines continued to produce clothes for Walmart.
