Blackout on the Lower Warnow

Tue Jan 07 18:58:08 CET 2025 Timsen

On Jan 7, 2025, at noon the 'Lingeborg', while sailing in the Lower Warnow fairway, suffered an engine failure with subsequent blackout. The ship was unable to maneuver and was drifting north towards the Baltic Sea due to the strong southwesterly winds on the river. The captain immediately carried out an emergency anchor maneuver. As a result, the freighter allided with two fairway buoys. The freighter's transverse position amid the Warnow fairway impaired the safety and ease of shipping. The Traffic Control Center of the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA Baltic Sea) immediately deployed the port tugs "Fairplay 55" and "Fairplay 64" to tow the freighter out of the fairway. At the same time, the patrol boat "Warnow" of the water police Rostock was deployed to secure the convoy. The freighter was brought back to the overseas port. where It had sailed shortly before. After about 60 minutes, the Warnow fairway was free again. Minor damage was caused to the fairway buoys. The water police inspection Rostock filed a ship accident report. A detention order was issued by the Professional Association for Transport, Postal Logistics and Telecommunications until the ship's class has been confirmed by the monitoring classification society. On Jan 6, officers of the Rostock water police had already subjected the ship, which was loaded with fertilizers, to a port state control. No defiencies were recorded.
