Master of Licentia drowned in an attempt to save his cat
Koos van der Molen (60), the master of the "Licentia", drowned on Mar 16, 2014, in an attempt to save his cat in the Haltern-Flaesheim Lock on the Wesel-Datteln-Canal. After locking the Van der Molen Licentia had Sunday ship had moored between the lock and the Schrammberg Bridge in the afternoon. at 3:50 p.m. the cat jumped overboard. The skipper followed and managed to save the cat, but failed to climb aboard and disappeared under water. His wife alerted the emergency services who launched a search with divers, firefighters and a helicopter. Divers from the DLRG Haltern and Dorsten recovered the body at 4:55 p.m. CPR was to no avail. He was pronounced dead in Duisburg hospital at 6:45 p.m. Ship traffic was interrupted during the SAR operation.
