Chemical drums fell into Kiel Canal
Five drums filled with phosphoric acid and surfactants chemical plunged into the water of the Kiel Canal locks in Holtenau in the morning of Feb 12, 2015. The incident occurred around 7.45 a.m. when the tanker was inside the lock. When the drums category "UN 1805" should be taken aboard, five of them fell into the water. One broke when it fell onto the Fender pontoons, and approximately 24 kilograms of its contents were spilled into the canal. The fire brigade was alerted but could not do anything against the pollution. Finally, the representants of the State Office for Coastal and Marine Protection decided not to raise the other barrels. The responsible officer of the ship now has to deal with a prosection for water Pollution and, in consultation with the Public Prosecutor, also had to pay a safety fine. The tanker which had berthed at the Bominflot Bunker Station in the Kiel Canal at 8 a.m. continued its voyage from Grangemouth to Rotterdam att 11.15 a.m.
