Irika Shipping S.A., a shipping management company registered in Panama, pleaded guilty to pollution charges in federal court this summer and was fined $4 million, officials said. The case was related to a cover-up of illegal pollution from one of Irika's cargo ships that visited Baltimore and other ports. In January, as the M/V Iorana arrived in Baltimore, a crew member passed a note to customs officials regarding illegal oil dumping that was going on aboard the ship. The Coast Guard investigated and obtained pictures taken from the whistleblower's cell phone that showed a 103-foot-long "magic hose" that bypassed the ship's oily water separator. The hose sent oily waste and sludge overboard. Irika will pay $4 million - a $3 million criminal fine and $1 million in "community service payments." Dream Seas (Iorana) IMO 9465796, dwt 71117, built 2009, flag Liberia, renamed in June-July this year.
