Greenpeace activists boarded drilling ship

Fri Sep 29 11:16:40 CEST 2023 Timsen

In Manzanillo Bay, Colima, nine Greenpeace activists boarded the 'Hidden Gem', on which they placed a blanket with the phrase “Destroyer of the oceans.” The environmental NGO asked the government of Mexico to communicate to the International Seabed Authority ts position in favour of a moratorium that, for now, delays the granting of permits for deep sea drilling in the area between Hawaii and Mexico. known as Clarion-Clipperton. A small white catamaran, with volunteer environmental activists from Greenpeace, set sail from the Muelle de las Hadas in Manzanillo on Sep 27 at 7 a.m. and headed to the 'Hidden Gem, which was anchored in the bay since Nov 2022, waiting for permits to extract minerals in international waters. Aboardtwo kayaks, nine volunteers approached the ship two kilometers from the coast, while, about two 200 meters away, the catamaran tried to establish communication with the captain of the 'Hidden Gem' At that moment, fove women climbed the starboard side of the ship and proceeded to place the yellow blanket on a metal structure- They troed to climb further, but the crew prevented them from doing so. With these actions, Greenpeace seeks to prohibit the extraction of mineral resources in international waters and, thus, avoid irreparable damage to the marine ecosystem.
