Crane booms collapsed and sent people into the water

Wed Apr 18 10:03:29 CEST 2018 Timsen

At the steel company Hollandia on the Schaar dike in Krimpen upon IJssel, both crane booms of the "HEBO Lift 2" collapsed during loading operations of a bridge section onto the barge "Lastdrager 35" and crashed subsequently in the morning of Apr 17. Four people, including the crane operator, were thrown into the water. The fire brigade deployed divers and rescued the people from the water during a major relief operation. The Seaport Police was also present. The "RWS 71" established a safety zone on site, while attempts were made to stabilize the situation and to limit damage. The two involved barges had to be stabilized after the accident. Two slightly injured people could be treated on the quay. The sheeleeg was recently taken into use after an overhaul. As it now seemed, due to a technical defect the anchor point of the guiding wire has broken off. In the coming days, extensive investigations will be conducted into the exact cause of the accident. The SZW Inspectorate will conduct an investigation. In the morning of Apr 18 the recovery of the debris commenced with the sheerleg "Matador 3".
