Collision on Danube

Mon Dec 16 09:24:39 CET 2013 Timsen

On Dec 14, 2013, at 6.30 p.m the "Carl Presser" was in a collision with the barge "Gau" on the Danube underneath the socalled Mühlhammer Cellar. The "Carl Presser" was underway from Regensburg to Austria with a cargo of 1.000 tons soy meal. The master agreed with the pilot of the "Gau", which was underway with a cargo of 900 tons steel rolls, a starboard side passage. The "Carl Presser" therefore had to leave the fairway in a curve, but got stuck on a gravel bar and was turned around by the current. The "Gau" could not stop in time though the pilot tried to avoid a collision going ful astern, and hit the "Carl Presser" with the starboard side stern. The damage at both vessels was estimated to be aruound 25.000 Euro each. The "Gau" was able to proceed to Deggendorf where a part of the cargo was unloaded. The water police Deggendorf launched an investigation. The "Carl Presser" refloated due to the strong current without external assistance and returned to Deggendorf too.
