Grounded freighter sank at Sulina lighthouse

Fri Oct 10 09:50:29 CEST 2014 Timsen

On Oct 9 the "Fortuna S" had sunk in the approach of Sulina with the superstructure and upper deck still showing above water. In the evening of Oct 7, the captain had asked for a permission to enter the port because of a storm, though during the night the Sulina channel access is prohibited. The application was approved and two pilots climbed aboard. Unfortunately, just 30 meters from the entrance channel, the freighter got stuck. Initially there were no problems, but at 10 p.m. the ship began to tilt to starboard. A pilot boat was sent to help, but could not get closer due to big waves. Three Coast Guard vessels and two vessels of the River Administration of the Lower Danube also tried to assist in vain, so the Navy was asked to help On Oct 8 at 3 a.m. the first attempt to take off the crew by helicopter started, but had to be aborted due to the darkness. The rescue mission was resumed in the early morning, and now the 12 people on board were evacuated safely. After the ship partially submerged, the owner has hired a team of divers to assess the situation. Ship evacuated after running aground at Sulina

Thu Oct 09 09:17:13 CEST 2014 Timsen

In the morning of Oct 8, 2014, the "Fortuna S", being underway to Giurgiuleşti with a cargo of 2,650 tonnes of salt to Syria, got in distress in the Sulina seaway. The ship got stuck off Sulinaat the new lighthouse on the south pier. The ship slammed into the pier and suffered significant water ingress. Storm and waves hampered the rescue of the crew. An IAR 330 Puma helicopter of the naval base at Tuzla was dispatched at 6.45 a.m. to save the crew, nine Syrians and one Romanian as well as the two pilots, on the whole 12 persons, at the request of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. The 12 people were taken off and transported to the shore near the new lighthouse in Sulina, where they were taken in care of the Port Master of Sulina and taken to the city for medical treatment. The grounded ship did not block the fairway.
