Grounded freighter sank at Sulina lighthouse
On Oct 9 the "Fortuna S" had sunk in the approach of Sulina with the superstructure and upper deck still showing above water. In the evening of Oct 7, the captain had asked for a permission to enter the port because of a storm, though during the night the Sulina channel access is prohibited. The application was approved and two pilots climbed aboard. Unfortunately, just 30 meters from the entrance channel, the freighter got stuck. Initially there were no problems, but at 10 p.m. the ship began to tilt to starboard. A pilot boat was sent to help, but could not get closer due to big waves. Three Coast Guard vessels and two vessels of the River Administration of the Lower Danube also tried to assist in vain, so the Navy was asked to help On Oct 8 at 3 a.m. the first attempt to take off the crew by helicopter started, but had to be aborted due to the darkness. The rescue mission was resumed in the early morning, and now the 12 people on board were evacuated safely. After the ship partially submerged, the owner has hired a team of divers to assess the situation.
